| Enter Shikari (sometimes stylized as ΣΠΤΣR SHΦΚΔRΦ) are an English post-hardcore/electronica band, formed in 2003 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. The band is named after a boat belonging to one of the band member's relatives, and a character in a play Roughton "Rou" Reynolds wrote before forming the band, both of which are named Shikari.Shikari also means 'Hunter', in Marathi, Persian, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali.Their debut album, Take to the Skies was released on March 19, 2007 and reached #4 in the Official UK Album Chart. Their second album, titled Common Dreads, was released on June 15, 2009 and debuted on the UK Albums Chart at 16. - Quote :
- The band formed as an evolution from an earlier band, Hybryd, and formed in St. Albans, England in 2003. All four members are from St. Albans.[5]
Enter Shikari secured a spot on the Gibson/MySpace stage at 2006's Download Festival. They have also had interviews with popular music press such as Kerrang! and Rock Sound. On November 4, 2006, they became only the second unsigned band to ever sell out London Astoria (the first being The Darkness).
Their first physical single was a double A-side of re-recorded versions of "Sorry You're Not A Winner" and "OK Time for Plan B", released on October 30, 2006 which was limited to 1000 copies of each format. In late 2006, despite many huge offers from major labels, the band announced that they had decided to 'go it alone' on their own label, Ambush Reality, with assistance from their distributor Vital.
In January 2007, Enter Shikari came 5th in BBC online's "Sound of 2007" poll, which compiles the views of numerous music critics on who they predict will achieve success in 2007. They also made the NME's "New Noise 2007", a list of the bands it considers most likely to achieve success in the coming year (previous years lists have included the likes of Arcade Fire, Hot Chip and Bloc Party). The band have played a set, and were interviewed, for the fourth edition of the radio version of The Tube.
In mid-January 2007 (week ending 13 Jan 2007), Enter Shikari's first single, "Mothership", entered the UK singles chart for one week at number 151, on Downloads only. This was followed a week later (Week ending 20 Jan 2007) by "Sorry You're Not a Winner/OK Time for Plan B", which charted at number 182 on the singles chart (despite its physical formats not being eligible for charts [at the band's request]) and number 146 in the Download Chart.
In June 2009 Juggernauts was released as a single reaching #28 in the UK Official Charts. Also they have seen the release of their second album Common Dreads on June 15 2009. The second single, No Sleep Tonight, became their 3rd most successful single reaching #63.
When they released Common Dreads, the album was a great success, with songs like "Solidarity" proving popular amongst fans, despite the great change in style from "Take To The Skies".
On February 22nd 2010 they will release a "not-so-mini mini album" named TRIBALISM. It will consist of several remixes of songs off Common Dreads, and include B-Sides such as "All Eyes On The Saint". It will also include two new tracks named 'Thumper' and the title track, 'Tribalism'. Thumper was released to the public on YouTube and Radio 1 on January 19th 2010. [edit] |
